Using Hyperlinks

Question: I have some gallery pages, created with iView Media Pro, with HTML files and all the images. It’s very nice. How can I incorporate these pages in my Freeway document, using master pages?

Using HTML-files created by other applications (and it can be any HTML-file, it doesn’t have to be gallery pages) that you don’t want or need to redesign, is simply a question of using hyperlinks from a Freeway document or page. The following description can be set up on a Master page or an individual site page, as you like.

Step 1: Create an “Index” page for image categories. Assuming you have three categories of product images: Apples, Pears and Peaches. On the Index page then, place three graphic boxes where you import the most illustrative thumbnail of the Apples category, the Pears category and finally the Peaches category respectively. If you like you can also add a caption underneath each category thumbnail, naming the category. It is best to use HTML text for the captions, to make them indexable by ’bots and spiders etc. Style the text as you like.

Step 2: Add a hyperlink to the Apples thumbnail, which points to the Apples category thumbnail page that your iView Pro app (or whatever app you’re using) has created. Do this by selecting the Apples thumbnail (click once on the box) and hit Cmd-K or go to top menu bar–>Edit–>Edit Hyperlink. In the URL field, input the location and name of your Apples thumbnail page. If you don’t know how to write the location string, clicking the “Browse” button next to the URL field enables you to locate the appropriate HTML file. You should also set the “Destination” —using the bottom pop-up— to "_blank". This will cause the category page to open in a new window, meaning that the visitor won’t have to use the Backspace key to return to your Index page.

When you’ve linked the Apples thumb on the “Index” page to the thumbnails page that iView already has created, repeat the steps on the Pears and Peaches thumbnails, as well as the image captions (if those have been added), linking them to their respective thumbnails page. If there’s more than one thumbnail page for one or more products, simply add another thumbnail to the Index page and hyperlink it to the appropriate thumbnails page. Or you can use the caption to state, f.e “Gallery 1”, “Gallery 2” etc.

Assuming iView (iPhoto, etc) has done its job, the thumbnail “gallery” pages have links properly set up already so there’s no need to worry about that.

<IMPORTANT> If the thumbnail HTML files and image files are located on your hard-drive, these must be manually uploaded to your web server AND the hyperlinks must point to that location, meaning that if you have linked to files on your hard drive, the links must be recreated after upload. Otherwise the hyperlinks will most likely point to a faulty location.

If you have Freeway Pro, you can use Tim Plumb’s “Upload Stuff” Action to specify which ‘external’ files to upload with the Freeway generated files, using Freeway’s Upload command. This way you don’t have to use an external FTP application for that specific uploading. Still, the image/thumbnail HTML files must be marked for upload with the Action, or uploaded separately, otherwise they will not be recognised when you put the “Index” page on your web server..</IMPORTANT>

Final steps: Save the Freeway document. Preview in your browser of choice. If it looks good enough to eat – upload to your web space. That’s it. Just remember to point the hyperlinks to the appropriate location and uploading all necessary files (including those generated by other applications) and you will be just fine.
